From Study to Sea: Tansheq Celebrates the Realisation of Tanzania’s Deep-Sea Fishing Project

Tansheq Limited is proud to celebrate a major national milestone: the realisation of Tanzania’s modern deep-sea fishing project, an initiative financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and implemented across Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.

The recent launch of the deep-sea fishing vessel marks more than the beginning of a new fishing operation. It is a powerful demonstration of how sound feasibility studies, environmental and social planning, stakeholder engagement and responsible investment preparation can move a national development vision from concept to implementation.

Tansheq is especially proud to have contributed to this important project through the preparation of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment and participation in the feasibility study for the operation of longline fishing vessels and fish processing plants under a Public-Private Partnership arrangement. The assignment covered key project components in both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar, including the planned development of fish processing facilities and supporting infrastructure linked to strategic fisheries locations such as Kilwa Fishing Port.

The project forms part of Tanzania’s wider ambition to strengthen the blue economy by enabling the country to sustainably utilise its Exclusive Economic Zone for tuna and tuna-like fisheries. Through institutions such as TAFICO and ZAFICO, the initiative is expected to enhance domestic fish supply, increase value addition, create employment, support smallholder fishers, strengthen local technical capacity and open new opportunities in regional and international fish markets.

Our ESIA work assessed the project’s potential environmental and social impacts and proposed practical mitigation and management measures to support responsible implementation. Key areas considered included marine ecosystem protection, sustainable fisheries management, occupational health and safety, waste management, stakeholder concerns, fish processing operations, and the integration of environmental and social safeguards into the project cycle.

The feasibility study further examined the business case for longline fishing vessel operations and fish processing plants, including vessel specifications, cold-chain requirements, market opportunities, PPP arrangements, operational risks and the role of smallholder fishers within the value chain. This helped provide the evidence base required for investment planning, regulatory compliance and implementation readiness.

For Tansheq, this milestone is a proud reminder that successful projects are not born at launch. They are built much earlier through careful studies, honest risk assessment, practical mitigation planning and meaningful engagement with institutions, communities and stakeholders.

We are honoured to have contributed to a project that aligns with Tanzania’s development aspirations, supports the blue economy, strengthens fisheries infrastructure in both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, and demonstrates how environmental and social safeguards can enable responsible investment.

As Tanzania continues to invest in strategic sectors such as fisheries, energy, infrastructure, mining, industry and agriculture, Tansheq remains committed to supporting clients with high-quality feasibility studies, Environmental and Social Impact Assessments, environmental audits, social risk management, occupational health and safety advisory, and sustainability solutions.

This milestone strengthens our belief that when technical excellence meets national ambition, transformative projects become possible.
